For the second time I've made my own lip balm - which I call lippy. This batch turned out pretty well. I made a batch of cinnamon and spearmint this time around. It was quite simple to make, and it made a LOT! The good thing about this is that there is absolutely NO petroleum oil used, no harsh chemicals, or unsafe coloring. I admit that I made a BIT of a mess in the kitchen this time around. I recommend using metal and/or glass utensils. My old faithful plastic measuring cup with a pour spout actually melted this time with the oil in it. I ended up with a mess on the counter and floor - and not as many tubes of mint as I'd made of cinnamon. Coconut oil is a natural sun blocker and gives about an SPF of 8-10 naturally so these are great for summer!
Here is how I did it in case you want to try.
Ingredients:
One cup of coconut oil - (I use organic, virgin oil from Trader Joe's)
One cup of beeswax - (I use pellets because they are easy to melt)
Two tablespoons of Vitamin E oil - (I just eyeball it instead of measuring this one)
Flavoring and coloring - if desired
In a double broiler, or metal pan - melt coconut oil and beeswax over LOW heat. Once melted together turn off the heat. Add Vitamin E oil and stir well. Next add about 10 drops of your flavoring, and 2-3 drops of coloring. Stir well. Pour into plastic pots or lip balm tubes. Allow to cool for several hours (or put in fridge) before use. Cap tightly. One batch approximately **60 tubes of lip balm.
**I made ONE batch without flavor or color. I poured half of that into my measuring cup with a pour spout and then added the flavor and color. This allowed me to do half with one flavor/color and the other half with another.
NOTES:
For my lip products I only use natural candy flavoring - try those from Natures Flavors for a line of organic, all natural, and oil soluble flavoring. These flavorings are TOTALLY different from the essential oils that I use in other skin products. These add a touch of flavor and scent and are edible. For coloring, I use different things - all oil soluble as they work best with the oil and wax mixture. It only takes a touch of coloring for these types of products as I do not want to actually deposit color on the skin or lips. The lippy still goes on clear.
I order the tubes and pots online. Check Amazon or search for wholesale vendors for the lowest prices. Quantity usually determines price.
If you make your own, do let me know how it turns out!
