Never buy carpet powder again! It's expensive, and full of chemicals that you might not want your little ones playing on! Instead, just make your own.
Buy a box/bag of baking soda (you know you have a big box of it already)! Pour enough out into a big bowl or container. Just use as much as you need to fill up the container/shaker you will store the carpet powder in.
(Note: You'll need some type of shaker container to store it in and use. I reused an old coffee creamer container as it lets me perfectly shake a fine layer on the carpets. This would be a perfect way to reuse an empty Parmesan cheese shaker!) Get some essential oil - choose any oil that you prefer. I used a lavender mix called "calming". Put about 8 drops (or so) into the baking soda and mix it up well with a wisk. You should not use so much oil that your powder becomes wet! Then store it in your shaker.
When it is time to vacuum, just shake out a fine layer on the carpets. Let sit for about 10-15 minutes, then vacuum. Voila - FRESH smelling carpet and it also freshens the air as you vacuum! You will never need to buy pre-made carpet powder again.

Update: You can do something else with this carpet powder! Of course you can! Pour some into a small mason jar. Add in a few more drops of essential oil, stir or mix. Put the mason jar ring, on with a piece of pretty paper as a lid, instead of the metal jar lid. Punch holes in the paper "lid". Put out as a room air freshener! Genius!
